Day in the Life: There Is Purpose in Preparation

Proverbs 21:5

“The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.”

It is Monday morning—the first day of the rest of your life. This is THE Monday, the one when you

were going to start your wellness-focused journey.

Well, Monday has arrived, and your alarm did not go off, putting you 30 minutes behind schedule.

As you race to the bathroom to complete your morning routine, you realize your bar of soap is

practically translucent, and no matter how hard you squeeze, you cannot quite get the last bit of

toothpaste out of the tube.

You reach for your go-to black slacks and white button-down shirt, only to discover that your black

slacks are balled up at the bottom of the hamper and your white button-down is still at the cleaners.

In the stress of waking up late and trying to make it to work on time, you forget the carefully

prepared meal-prep sitting in the refrigerator

You finally arrive at work with zero minutes to spare, wearing an ill-fitting suit, without your lunch,

and feeling very aware that your morning started with a nearly transparent piece of soap and a

microscopic dab of toothpaste.

Then you remember: your Monday morning briefing begins in 15 minutes. Now you are scrambling

to log on and review your final notes before your presentation.

Preparation Creates Margin

Preparation is a key factor in risk mitigation and successfully managing life.

No, preparation will not guarantee that life won’t “life.” Things will still go wrong. Schedules will

change. Unexpected situations will happen. But preparation can help mitigate unnecessary stress

when life has its way.

A few simple checks the night before could have changed the entire morning: checking your alarm

settings, selecting your work attire in advance—or having a few reliable outfits in rotation—keeping

personal hygiene items stocked, placing your meal-prep where you will remember it, and setting

visible reminders to help jog your memory.

None of those things would guarantee a perfect Monday. But they could have prevented several

avoidable problems from piling on top of one another.

Remember THE Monday?

You know the one—the Monday when you planned to begin your wellness journey.

Instead of starting the day focused, prepared, and ready to take care of yourself, you spent the

morning reacting to one preventable problem after another.

That is the purpose of preparation.

Preparation is not about controlling every possible outcome. It is about doing what you can ahead of time so that when the unexpected happens, you have the capacity to manage it without everything else falling apart.
