The NEXGEN Scholarship Award, formerly the Mission McLendon Scholarship Award, invests in students who demonstrate purpose, perseverance, and the potential to lead. More than financial support, this scholarship recognizes emerging leaders who are committed to building a brighter future for themselves and their communities. I was selected as a recipient of the NEXGEN Scholarship. I earned the scholarship after watching the documentary titled Stamped from the Beginning, which explored the origins and history of anti-black ideas rooted in American society. I was asked to write an essay on its themes, and I was pleased because learning about the history of my people has always been deeply fascinating to me, and I enjoyed the opportunity to represent it through my writing.
